Examples of different types of stop motion animation

Animation has evolved massively over the years, becoming more and more popular with all ages. The different Animations  are from hand-drawn to 3D. Film Animation is a competitive career choice, and only the best with come out on top. The industry is demanding a good understanding of the art and how much time and effort goes into it, technical skills and a creative style, that will make you stand out from the rest. In this day in age technology is huge, and this is a huge part of animation, although it can be master in many different ways. However, traditional stop motion is less expensive and time-consuming to produce than the current computer animation.

 There are many different various types of stop-motion animation, with examples are:

Clay Animation

Clay animation is  a very popular form of stop-motion animation that uses figures made of clay. it involves sculpting characters and background sets out of clay. Many famous  British television shows and films are clay animation such as, Wallace and Grommet, Chicken Run and Morph. Clay animation is very recognisable  because the characters all have slight indentations where they have been moulded.


Puppet Animation

Puppet animation is a technique that involves the animation of still puppets. this is very similar to clay animation in many ways, as the characters and sets are already made in forms instead of being made while the animation is being shot. Puppet Animation is used in the 1969 worldwide television series, Sesame Street. the American series is described as 'A long-time favourite of children and adults'. Puppet animation is very recognisable because the characters are made of coloured fabric and have flamboyant embellishments on them.

Cut-Out Animation

Cut-out animation is another technique of producing animations, which uses flat characters, props and backgrounds cut out from various materials such as, cardboard, hard paper and stiff photographs. This is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly way of animation. The extremely popular rude television series, South Park used cut-out animation for its few first series. As it has got more and popular it has moved on to more advance animation.


Pixilation

Pixilation is known for being one of the most difficult forms of stop-motion animation. This stop motion animation consist of  live actors changing their movement in each frame of the animation. whilst they pose multiple frames are being taken and the position of actors will change slightly in each frame by frame. this a hugely time consuming process of stop motion animation.  a prime example of Pixilation is in the short film Neighbours.

Silhouette Animation



Silhouette animation involves characters/objects  who are only visible as black silhouettes. This is usually accomplished by low key back-lighting and having  detailed cardboard cut-outs. this produces wonderful shadows. this is very similar to cut-out animation, as it is also very environmentally friendly and low cost. a very popular romance film that uses this stop motion technique is Princes et Princesses. this film was produced in the year 2000 and is still being watched. This technique is still being used today, as it is simple but looks very effective.

Object Animation





Object stop motion is anything form of animation. it consists of  movements of any non-drawn objects such as toys, blocks, dolls, and many more. they are also not designed to look like a recognizable human or animal character. an example film that uses object animation is the Lego movie, that was made in 2014. the film is highly popular to children, and over the years has made a fortune. Lego was first a plastic toy which children play with.

I have drawn out a number of storyboards, which will just give a quick view of different angles and a rough shoot of how my video will go. the pictures are drawn very roughly and they do need a lot more work. Audio production for animation, e.g musicals score, sound effects and voice overs- S

Above I have embedded two featurettes of the SMA film Coraline, which give me a better insight to the audio production for the animated film. Having 250 people working on the character Coraline only, the producer Henry took exactly what was written in the book, brought it alight.  before filming started, they recorded the voices of the characters first so that they knew what the mouth position should be like. One of the directors also said 'Often the harder shots are the ones that don't have dialogue, because yo have to create the emotion and tension with filming and just the positioning of the characters'. This just show how much the Audio and the sound track is vital to a film.
